How Setting Daily Goals Can Keep You On Task and Focused

Entrepreneurship

Having long-term goals is important, however, if you’re not careful, its easy to lose sight of the long-term and you can easily fall off the wagon.  But when you solidify your long-term goals by creating daily goals and setting up milestones, you make achieving your desired end-result goals much more doable.  Daily goals allow you to achieve the small tasks while tackling the big-picture goal. Remember, you eat an elephant one bite at a time.

The goals you set each day should stem from your big-picture, long-term goals.  For example, you set a new years resolution to be more active and healthy, you can then set daily goals to help you reach your big-picture goal.  Daily goals that you can set that have the long-term in mind can include: getting your five fruits and veggies each day, frequent exercise (4-5 times weekly), drinking eight glasses of water each day, eating a balanced breakfast, skipping dessert, etc.  By setting these daily goals your large-scale goal is much more doable and easier to achieve. Heres how to get it done, step by step:

Step One — Understand Your Big Picture Goals

Your first step is to understand your long-term goals.  What does your dream at the end of this look like? Its much harder to hit a target if you dont know where youre aiming.  You have to know where the endis and what that destination looks like.

Thankfully theres more than one way to skin a cat and theres more than one way to reach your destination.  The way you get there and the route you take can change all along the way, but you must know where the final destination is.  If you dont know where it is, how are you supposed to get there?

Step Two — Plan It Out

Now that you know your desired destination, its time to start planning it out day by day.  Look at your big-picture goal and think what can I tackle today?  Is it eating fewer calories? Work out? Get 10,000 steps in? If you need to go to the gym, what other things do you need to do to get it done?  Do you need to wake up earlier? Remember to pack gym clothes? Drop your kids at the sitters?  Whatever it is, think about and plan out every aspect you can so youre more likely to follow through.

Step Three — Prioritize

Everyones schedules are busy and hectic.  Its easy to blame the lack of achievement on I dont have time.”  Well, actually you do have time, but you give your time to higher priority things and responsibility.  If you really want to achieve your goals, you must make room for both the large and small tasks to get there.

Step Four — Analyze Yourself

Make sure you take periodic breaks to check yourself.  Make sure you are still on the right track. Its okay to sometimes get off track, the important part is that you check yourself and fix what needs fixing and get back on the saddle.

Remember that Rome wasn’t built in a day and those big goals aren’t reachable in a day.  The days you complete your goals are the building blocks to your desired end result.  With those smaller goals completed, you can reach your bigger-picture goals.
